Inland Empire Divisionals 2005

This tournament, the qualifier for Summer Nationals for the Inland Empire, is the biggest tournament of the year. It brings out fencers from every club in the area to compete for not just the qualifying spots, but also bragging rights.

This year, coach Noah Buntain competed in all three weapons, first-year competitor Carolyn Travis tested herself in both Saber and Foil, and four of our club members made their first showings at the Novice Foil tournament.

Overall, our club had a strong showing, taking home a trophy and several medals from the two-day tournament.

The interesting development was the use of the new blocking times for both saber and foil. With the provisional rules passed by the FIE this year, the time between one hit registering and a second hit also allowed to register valid has been decreased. The intention is to create fewer two-light scenarios, make it easier for the directors and spectators to follow a touch. However, it some interesting effects on fencing actions, particularly the beat attack and the parry riposte. Many counter-attacks and remises that would have not been awarded touches under the rules of right-of-way, had now become one-light wonders.

This was especially apparent in the Saber tournament. Many of the competitors had not tested the new timings and were flustered throughout the competition by this alteration. It was interesting to see Saber slow down quite a bit as each fencer became extremely wary of the counter-attack. Stripped of their right-of-way shield, the all-out attack became rather dicey for the saberists.

In foil, it was less apparent, but still had an effect nonetheless. Many beat attacks and parry ripostes were not illuminating due to the continuation of the opponents (formerly out of time/right-of-way) remise hitting target first.

Likely, this will continue to have an effect on fencing style. While it may mean that many people come to favor the counter-attack above all else, it could also lead to some very clean parries and more careful fencing.

In any event, here are the results:

Men's Saber
  Noah Buntain - 1st (DivII/III)

Women's Saber
  Carolyn Travis - 2nd (DivII/III)

Men's Foil
  Noah Buntain - 5th (DivIII)

  Ryan Smyth - 4th
  Kurt Lovelyn - 5th

  Melissa Smyth - 8th
